Implementation of Transponder Mandate within BIRK CTR

1 Introduction

This circular is issued to inform all pilots of the forthcoming implementation of a transponder mandate within Reykjavik airport control zone (BIRK CTR).

2 Information

The transponder mandate will be implemented in parallel with the AIRAC publication on October 1 st 2026.
The goal of the implementation is to improve surveillance in airspace controlled by Reykjavík control tower.

3 Equipment requirement

  • All aircraft within BIRK CTR shall be equipped with an operational mode A, mode C or mode S transponder.
  • Exemptions will be granted according to requests that can be applied for on the Avians website.

4 Processing of exemptions

Exceptions will be processed by BIRK TWR as quickly as possible, within the day.
Pilots can expect to be assigned departure and/or arrival times to manage load and the number of exempt aircraft at any given time.
